In 50 Years, Will Anybody Think LeBron James Was Better Than Steph Curry?

$

0

Fifty years from now, when mankind is reflecting on the times we now occupy, there is a better-than-average chance it will conclude Stephen Curry — known to his contemporaries as “Steph” — was obviously the greatest player of his era.

If you can forgive a statement of the obvious, he is the common denominator on three (going on four) of the best teams in NBA history, and not a common denominator in the “Robert Horry has six rings” kind of way, but in the way of a two-time MVP who is probably the best shooter in basketball history, one of the top five point guards in basketball history, one of the best overall scorers in basketball history, the most popular player of his time, and the individual player who will be most associated with a change in the way basketball was played by his contemporaries.

That his scoring numbers have dropped by a few points per game since the Warriors got Kevin Durant is not an argument against his greatness, but an example of it. Curry — who, again, is the best shooter and point guard in the NBA — was a third-team All-NBA pick this year who allowed an inferior player (Durant) to take more shots than him, because if you want to play with Durant (which you do), you’re just going to have to let him do that.

*****

This prediction of mine depends on our future society valuing winning in sports to the same approximate degree our present society does. This is the aspect of this prediction that concerns me most, because modern NBA fans seem to care less about winning than ever before. The league today exists for many as a loose context in which to observe balletic feats and interpersonal dramas; which team wins is a lesser concern. If this trend continues, my prediction will be hopelessly wrong, as it will be based on the false premise that the NBA is sports, and its fans therefore care who wins.

The existence of this piece, naturally, indicates I expect this trend will reverse itself. And in 50 years, when people are looking back on the 2010s, they will see that Curry was the defining player for the defining team of his time.

LeBron, on the other hand, will be mostly remembered for losing.

Fifty years from now, LeBron’s record in the NBA Finals (3-6, going on 3-7) is going to matter more than it does now.  We know this because of Wilt Chamberlain. He was obviously the best player of his era — he averaged 30.1 points and 22.9 rebounds per game for his career, yet nobody cares because Chamberlain lost twice as many Finals as he won and Bill Russell won 11 championships.

Because of this, Russell is almost universally considered the superior player, even though, statistically, Russell was a shadow of the player Chamberlain was. Bill Russell never managed so much as 19 points per game in a single season. He averaged 15.1 points and 22.5 rebounds in his career, with a worse shooting percentage from the field than Chamberlain and with similar numbers at the foul line and on assists. Likewise, few in the non-Chamberlain realm can match James’ statistical production – he’s at 27-7-7 for his career. Still, the statistical gap between James and Curry (26-5-6) is not as wide as the one between Chamberlain and Russell.

A one-on-one tournament featuring every player who ever lived might come down to Chamberlain vs. James in the finals. But that is not the game we’re talking about.

That being the case, Russell is correctly thought of as greater than Chamberlain, and Curry eventually will enjoy the same boost over James, assuming their careers continue to follow the same trajectory.

It is here I have to acknowledge a major difference between the Russell-Chamberlain era and the James-Curry one, which is video. Future generations will be able to watch unlimited amounts of video of these two players, which we can’t do with the players of the 1960s. This may favor James, since he really has to be seen to be understood. So many of the baskets he scores are baskets that could only be scored by him, doing things that will look just as astonishing 50 years from now as they do today.

But the same can be said for Curry. He has more imitators than LeBron, because the things Curry does on the floor are more easily copied by people far less skilled. But how many players in the history of basketball have been able to play the way Curry plays on a nightly basis while competing for championships year after year?

Any?

It goes without saying that neither James nor Curry can do what the other does. But as with the statistics, there isn’t much of a gap between the two when it comes to degree of difficulty. They are equally shocking to watch. And while personal tastes in players will vary from one to the other, video is not likely to swing this future debate.

*****

So far, all the points I’ve raised apply to the present just as they would the future. They are static points. Once all the games are over for these two, that’s the book on them for ever and ever, amen.

But there is one way LeBron could gain on Curry after both their careers have ended. It is possible that basketball as it is played in this era will be seen by future generations as a historical aberration, which would be very bad for Curry.

To take one possible example, the NBA of 2068 might well be dominated by teams that use deep rosters of huge, extremely athletic players to run a full-court press and chase shooters into two-point attempts. I use this as an example because it seems like a logical counter to the pace-and-space style of today, but you can fill in your own basketball fantasy here. The point is, if future generations perceive the scoring and shooting numbers from this era to be goofy in some way — like present generations perceive the rebounding numbers from the Chamberlain-Russell era — then its possible Curry could be seen as an interesting gizmo who was the foremost practitioner of the style du jour, but was ultimately of little consequence.

If Curry was having Steve Nash’s career, that’s exactly what I would be predicting. But he isn’t. He is the central figure on a full-blown NBA dynasty, something people do not forget, and something LeBron has never had the ability, the patience or the good fortune to become.

LeBron will always have his defenders. But history, as they say, is written by the winners, and in his time, in this era, that’s Stephen Curry.

The Golden State Warriors Have Figured Out How to Share the Basketball

$

When Kevin Durant joined the Golden State Warriors, conventional wisdom suggested that this superteam would dominate the NBA for years to come. The only reasonable contrarian take available was the ol’ “there’s only one basketball” theory. Pundits were forced to suggest there’d be a power struggle as a cadre of alphas fought for the ME INSTEAD OF THE WE.

A few years in, and boy, does that look even sillier than it did at the time. The Warriors have won two consecutive titles and appear to be well on their way to a third. Their secret?

Straight up communism. Or at least the kind understood by Pat Fitzgerald. I think. Still not sure what he was driving at there.

That’s truly amazing. Surely there’s some plan for the Big Three to get equitable shot attempts, but the fact that it’s so even is incredible. As Dr. Ian Malcolm said, life finds a way.

This stat is also amusing considering the fact that the biggest form of drama came when Draymond Green failed to set Durant up for a potential game-winning shot. Perhaps everyone should have been thanking him for keeping the perfect ratio intact.

Was This Kevin Durant Play The Worst Missed Call In NBA History?

$

Kevin Durant was out of bounds. There was no question about it. None. Yet somehow, officials allowed the play to continue and theGolden State Warriors benefited, as Stephen Curry buried a jumper. It was, quite possibly, the worst missed call in NBA history.

Watch:

How on Earth do you miss that?

The Warriors wound up losing on the next play, as James Harden nailed a clutch 3-pointer to give the Houston Rockets a 135-134 win in overtime. Ball don’t lie and all that.

Here's What You Missed in the 1st Half of the NBA Season in 500 Words or Less

$

The NFL, sadly, only has three games left in its season. The coaching carousel is basically done spinning, and draft excitement should pick up soon. If you’ve been focused on college football and the NFL for the last four months, and only seen some NBA here and there, this is what you’ve missed:

1. Kevin Durant vs Draymond Green. Yes, it was a big deal. The Warriors suspended Green for among other things, repeatedly calling Durant a bitch on the bench. Green proceeded to miss 12 of 13 games. Before this, the Will-Durant-Stay storyline was interesting; after that, it’s been the #1 NBA storyline. Also, Green is having the worst season of his career since he became a starter: 41% FG, 23% 3FG, 7.0 ppg.

2. James Harden remains unguardable (34.2 ppg), but he’s not the most valuable player in the NBA.

3. That would be LeBron. The Lakers were surging and up to 4th in the West on Christmas Day after beating the Warriors. But he injured his groin and hasn’t played since. LA has gone 3-7 without him and dropped to 9th in the West. Lonzo Ball has not made ‘the leap’ and he’s shooting an unacceptable 42 percent from the foul line.

4. Stephen Curry is charging hard at Magic Johnson as the greatest point guard in NBA history. I’d long thought that Curry only had a tiny chance to catch Magic. But the greatest shooter in NBA history continues to improve. Somehow, he’s shooting 45 percent on three-pointers, while attempting 11 per game. He’s averaging 29.4 ppg and has been nearly as unstoppable as he was during his two MVP seasons.

5. Where’s Boston? The Celtics are a bit of a mess. There’s infighting. Kyrie Irving is not happy with his teammates. Gordon Hayward has not looked like the star he was pre-injury. Al Horford looks very old. At 25-18, it’s no lock they win 50 games.

6. What about Houston? Other than James Harden, the Rockets have struggled big-time. Harden’s insane four-week run has propelled the Rockets back into the Top 8 in the West, but Chris Paul has had more hamstring problems. Clint Capela is hurt and may return late in February. The Carmelo Anthony experience ended quickly. Harden has been incredible, but carrying the Rockets to a Top 4 seed in the West will likely mean he’s going to be running on empty in the playoffs.

7. Russell Westbrook is averaging a triple double (again) but his 21-10-10 has been obscured by his ghastly 23% three-point shooting. The Thunder’s best player has been Paul George (career-highs 26.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg).

8. Luka friggin’ Doncic. At 19, the Dallas rookie is averaging 20-6-5 and shooting 43/37/73. In a word: Incredible.

9. Jimmy Butler wanted out of Minnesota, and got traded the the 76ers, but his hard-nosed style on and off the court already has rubbed Joel Embiid the wrong way. They’re the 2nd best trio in the NBA, but it’s probably not going to work. The ultimate boom or bust playoff team – assuming Butler doesn’t get dealt by the trading deadline.

10. Tank for Zion. Yes, I think RJ Barrett has the inside track on being the #1 pick in the 2019 NBA draft, but fans in Cleveland, New York and Phoenix are drooling over the idea of Duke star Zion Williamson next year. The Knicks, plus Porzingis and Zion, suddenly may become attractive to the Kevin Durant. “Hey Kevin, this would be your team!”

Anthony Davis Wants Out, and Here's Why the Lakers Should Overbid Now Before Boston Steals Him

$
0
0

Anthony Davis is certainly one of the five best players in the NBA, but his Pelicans are floundering. After a stunning 1st round sweep of the Blazers last year, there was optimism around New Orleans this season. Maybe they’d win a 2nd round playoff series and be able to convince Davis (3rd in the NBA in scoring, 4th in rebound, 2nd in blocks), to sign a supermax contract and stay in the Bayou.

It’s just not happening. The Pelicans are 22-28 and fading out of playoff contention. They haven’t been above .500 since before Thanksgiving. The joy from a 4-0 start is a distant memory.

Anthony Davis has officially requested a trade out of New Orleans, and now the question becomes do the Pelicans trade him now, or wait for a summer bidding war?

The NBA trade deadline is less than two weeks away.

Could New Orleans get a desperate Lakers team – they’re not there yet – to overpay now? The struggling Celtics obviously covet Davis, as they have for two years now. They’ve got the most draft capital and better younger talent than the Lakers. But due to salary cap restrictions, they are somewhat hamstrung in what they can do. (Details here.)

Besides those two, do any other teams remotely make sense for New Orleans now or in the summer?

Denver: The Nuggets have the 2nd best record in the West, one of the best rosters in the NBA, and seven players averaging double digits. Jokic appears to be a superstar (20.1 ppg, 10.4 rpg, 7.7 apg), and Jamal Murray is on the cusp of stardom (18.5 ppg) and in some respect maybe these are the baby Warriors, before they broke through. That team nearly traded Stephen Curry, and then Klay Thompson. If Denver goes down in the 1st round, maybe anything’s possible, but before the trade deadline, I’d say no.

LA Clippers: There’s been smoke around the Clippers and Kawhi Leonard since the summer of 2018, and they’re following him around as if recruiting him. Was that to throw off the scent of their real interest … Anthony Davis? The Clippers have overachieved this year, and when LeBron comes back, the Clippers probably miss the playoffs. I’d keep an eye on them at the deadline. Problem is, the Pelicans should want 1st round picks or talented prospects on their rookie contracts. Cap space does nothing for the Pelicans. I don’t think Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and future picks is better than what the Lakers can offer.

Houston Rockets: It’s Daryl Morey, alright? I’m obligated to mention the Rockets.

Philadelphia 76ers: The Jimmy Butler experiment doesn’t appear to be working out. Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid on the floor at the same time still feels clunky. Maybe this is the old Thunder with a young Harden-Westbrook-Durant and we never see it all the way through. But if you’re the 76ers, do you take a wild swing and try to pair Embiid and Davis? I don’t think it’d work, but the process is likely going to lose Butler for nothing.

New York Knicks: How about this – the Knicks call the Pelicans and said hold off on trading him now, what if we get the #1 pick? We would trade you Zion Williamson and Kristaps Porzingis and whatever else you want for Davis. The Pelicans have to consider this … right?

Most other teams that would want Anthony Davis – even as a rental – he won’t be signing with. There are a limited number of markets he’s going to sign with.

Lakers fans who say they should wait for the summer are wrong. They should overpay now. Boston has a deeper war chest. This will probably end up being enough:

Brandon Ingram
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
Kyle Kuzma
Ivica Zubac
(maybe a 1st round pick)

for

Anthony Davis.

You don’t have much around AD and LeBron, but you suddenly become very dangerous in the West, you get Lonzo Ball back in early March, and you keep Josh Hart as a role player.

Fyre Festival x Jurassic Park = Not bad.

The Pelicans really missed out on Kyle Kuzma. Here he is lighting up the 76ers for 23 points in the 1st quarter, 39 for the game.

This is very long, but you will enjoy all of Stephen Curry’s 50-point games during his illustrious NBA career.

Sadly, I’d never heard this. It’s really, really excellent. You should listen to it twice.

This Ryan Seacrest interview with Lady Gaga got kind of weird. Pretty bad job on the video, but E! won’t put it online.

Stephen Curry Got Rowdy With a Bunch of Speedo-Wearing Bros in the Davidson Student Section

Stephen Curry returned to his college campus last night to watch Davidson play Saint Joseph’s. And he had a good time. The whole town knows he had a good time.

Curry, who led the Wildcats to the Elite Eight in 2008, spearheaded a spirited rendition of Sweet Caroline during the game and climbed into the student section after the final buzzer to celebrate victory with some scantily-clad basketball enthusiasts.

You know, classic 10-year reunion stuff that you wake up the next morning and break down with your friends in the dining hall. Stuff you wonder if you’re too old for on the flight home.

Also in attendance? Baseball’s Frank Viola.

What a night.

NBA 3-Point Contest: Preview, How to Watch Online, Live Stream

One of the most anticipated events in this year’s NBA All-Star Weekend is the 3-Point Contest on All-Star Saturday Night, for one simple reason: the Curry Brothers are coming home and are going up against each other while eight more sharpshooters look to spoil their party and take home the trophy.

How to Watch NBA 3 Point Contest

  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)
  • Date: Saturday, Feb. 16
  • Time: 8 p.m. ET
  • TV Channel: TNT
  • Where: Spectrum Center, Charlotte, NC

Stephen and Seth Curry both grew up in Charlotte while their father, Dell Curry, was a member of the Hornets. Dell is one of the best three-point shooters in NBA history, and his two sons clearly inherited that skill. Steph and Seth are in the top 6 this season in three-point shooting percentage, and there is no doubt they’ll be looking forward to facing each other in what should be a great battle between brothers.

But it’s not just about the Curry’s. Completing the field of 10 that will participate in the contest are Dirk Nowitzki from the Mavericks, Buddy Hield from the Kings, Seth’s Blazers teammate Damian Lillard, Khris Middleton of the Bucks, Kemba Walker from the hometown Hornets, Danny Green of the Raptors, defending champion Devin Booker from the Suns, and Joe Harris from the Nets.

The ‘moneyball’ is always the key piece of the 3-point shootout, and with the quality of the field in this year’s contest, they might just decide the winner. Let the games begin, and the threes fly.

Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Curry Made a Mockery of Important NBA Journalism

In a deeply troubling stunt, Jimmy Fallon enticed Stephen Curry into parroting the late-night host’s non-sequitur during NBA All-Star Game media appearances. The Golden State Warriors guard dutifully worked in “Energizer Bunny,” “flipping pancakes,” and “wham, bam, can of ham” into his responses.

All this for a laugh at the expense of more serious journalists, some of them asking very important questions. Sad to think that this took away from time that could have been spent on James Harden beard treatment or ASG defensive strategy.

This type of sneaky messaging is the future of branded content. Or maybe it’s already here. Who is to know if scores of players are just slipping in buzzwords to mess with us and/or move product.

Stay woke, people.

If LeBron Misses the Playoffs, He'll Join a Small List of NBA Superstars That Missed the Playoffs in Their Prime

LeBron’s Lakers missed an opportunity to gain ground in the Western Conference playoff race with another loss Monday to an inferior team, falling to the Grizzlies. Luckily for the Lakers, the Spurs lost (again) and the Kings lost, but the Clippers won, so the Lakers will fall four games back of the 7th seed, and three games back of the 8th seed.

The Lakers have 22 games left.

The idea of LeBron missing the playoffs was unfathomable before the season began. He’d been to the Finals eight straight years – four in Miami, four in Cleveland – a modern day record. In fact, LeBron’s Lakers were in great position to be a threat in the West as recently as Christmas night, when they crushed the Warriors in Oracle and were 4th in the West.

But the win came at a cost – LeBron suffered a groin injury and proceeded to miss 18 games. LA went 6-12. They now find themselves potentially missing the playoffs, which would be a massive blow to postseason TV ratings and without question it would dent his legacy a bit.

I tried to compile a list of superstars in the modern era who missed the playoffs in their prime. It’s a very short list. Here is the list of stars who never missed the playoffs in their prime*:

Michael Jordan (sorry, the Wizards at age 38 wasn’t his prime)
Magic Johnson (nope, his 32-game stint at age 36 doesn’t count)
Larry Bird
Julius Erving
Tim Duncan
Shaq
Karl Malone
John Stockton
Clyde Drexler
Kevin Durant (injured in 2015 at the age 26, played just 27 games, and the Thunder missed the postseason)
Stephen Curry (injured in 2012 at the age of 23, missed 40 games – including the last 28 due to surgery and the Warriors missed the playoffs)

I could only find five superstars who missed the playoffs in their prime, and two of them involved serious injuries:

Kobe Bryant: At age 26 in 2005, Bryant was coming off the Colorado scandal and the court case, and dealing with fallout of Phil Jackson’s book ripping him. Kobe led the NBA in scoring (27.6 ppg in 66 games) but the Lakers missed the playoffs. But this wasn’t all about the supporting cast. He did have Lamar Odom and Caron Butler. LA was the worst defensive team in the NBA. It took Kobe 2.5 years to get Pau Gasol, who helped Kobe win two more titles.

Hakeem Olajuwon: At age 29, Olajuwon missed the playoffs. It was a tumultuous year for the Rockets, as they fired their coach, but Olajuwon was terrific. He played 70 games and averaged 21 points and 12 rebounds. Two years later, he won a title.

Charles Barkley: At age 24 – some will quibble if this was really his prime, but it certainly was, as he averaged 28-11 in 80 games and was named first team All-NBA – missed playoffs. It was his 4th season in the NBA.

Dwyane Wade: At age 26, he had a nagging knee injury and missed the final 21 games of the season and got surgery. The Heat missed the playoffs.

Dirk Nowitzki: At age 34, he missed the first 27 games of the 2013 season (32% of the season) and the Mavs missed the playoffs.

LeBron James has earned all the accolades he’s received for the last eight years. One of his most impressive records is that he’s never lost in the first round of the playoffs. Hell, he’s been to the playoffs for 13 straight seasons! But he will certainly be dinged if he is unable to get the Lakers to the playoffs this season, or if he gets there and goes down in the first round.

LeBron’s averaging 26-8-7 which is at or above what he’s averaged for his career. So he’s not having a down year – outside of the longest stretch of missed games in his career. Same with his shooting numbers (51/35/67, though his free throw percentage is currently a career-low). He’s still in his prime.

He’s got 22 games to get this group to the playoffs.

* We can debate “prime” for hours and not get a definitive answer. For the purposes of this piece, it’s on a case-by-case basis.
